Implementation of Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) Prevention Program

The Global Safety Council (GSC) of ABG recognised the need to address Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF) separately from less severe injuries. Data analysis indicated that while overall injury frequency rates were reducing, SIF incidents persisted. Industry research also supported the finding that the root causes of SIF incidents differ from those of minor injuries.
To effectively mitigate these high-risk events, GSC formed a specialised working group, leveraging expertise from Novelis and Birla Carbon. This led to the development and implementation of a structured SIF Prevention Program across ABG businesses.
Methodology and Implementation

1. Data-Driven Approach
- A retrospective manual review was conducted on all reported incidents since 2014, utilizing the Enablon platform to categorise events against SIF criteria.
- Events were continuously reviewed against a standardized SIF classification system.
- Quarterly reviews ensured proper reporting and validation of incident impacts, enabling a more accurate understanding of risks and areas of concern.
2. Challenges in Data Management
- Enablon’s existing capabilities did not support direct SIF categorisation and analysis.
- Significant manual efforts were required to extract, analyse, and categorize the data to identify trends and insights.
- The working group developed a structured methodology for assessing Enablon outputs and refining the analysis to ensure comprehensive SIF tracking.
3. Cross-Business Collaboration
- Knowledge transfer and best practices from Novelis and Birla Carbon were integrated into the broader ABG strategy.
- The program was systematically deployed across all ABG businesses to create a unified approach to SIF prevention.
Key Outcomes and Learnings
Improved Incident Reporting & Risk Awareness
The rigorous review process enhanced the accuracy and consistency of incident reporting, ensuring SIF risks were identified and addressed proactively.
Development of a Standardized SIF Framework
A common methodology was established across businesses, allowing for a structured approach to categorising and mitigating serious incidents.
Strengthened Governance and Review Mechanisms
The quarterly review process institutionalised a culture of continuous learning and improvement, ensuring that emerging risks were promptly identified and mitigated.
Identification of Gaps in Digital Reporting Capabilities
While Enablon provided a foundational platform for incident reporting, the lack of built-in SIF analytics highlighted the need for additional data processing mechanisms.
Conclusion and Future Roadmap
The implementation of the SIF Prevention Program has been a significant step towards mitigating high-consequence incidents within ABG businesses. The structured approach, coupled with continuous reviews and knowledge transfer, has enabled a deeper understanding of SIF risks and improved preventive actions.
Moving forward, there is a need to explore digital solutions that enhance automated SIF categorisation and analytics within Enablon, reducing manual efforts while improving the accuracy of insights. Additionally, expanding leadership engagement and workforce training on SIF criteria will further embed a proactive safety culture across all business units.
